On 20 October 2022, the Huygens Institute, International Institute for Social History, and Ambo Anthos released Nog Meer Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland (‘Even More World History of the Netherlands’), the sequel to the popular Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland (2018). RIAS PhD candidate Debby Esmeé de Vlugt contributed to the book with a chapter on Black Panther solidarity in the Netherlands.
Nog Meer Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland argues that the history of the Netherlands has been deeply intertwined with the history of the world overall. Starting in approximately 250 000 BCE and ending as recent as 2019, it looks at different moments in time when transnational migration, trade, and exchange of knowledge shaped Dutch society. Each chapter is attached to a specific year.
For the year 1969, Debby Esmeé wrote a chapter on the history of the Dutch Black Panther Solidarity Committee. This committee was established by a group of Dutch activists who wanted to support the African American Black Panther Party through a platform of education, fundraising, and political protest. Throughout her chapter, she shows how this committee was connected to the Dutch New Left, the Antillean and Surinamese fight against colonialism, and the global revolutionary network of the Black Panther Party. Her contribution was based on her PhD project, which examines the history of the Black Power movement in the Dutch Atlantic between 1968 and 1973.
Nog Meer Wereldgeschiedenis van Nederland is sold at bookstores around the Netherlands and will soon also be available at the Zeeuwse Bibliotheek.
