New Book Chapter by RIAS Staff: Fostering Intercultural Skills and Environmental Democracy Through Virtual Exchange

RIAS staff members Gaetano Di Tommaso and Dario Fazzi have recently published a book chapter, titled “Fostering Intercultural Skills and Environmental Democracy Through Virtual Exchange: A Case Study of Transatlantic Delta Communities.” Published in the volume Intercultural Competence Through Virtual Exchange, this book chapter provides an account of a virtual exchange conducted between Dutch and American students.

Focusing on environmental impacts in delta regions across the Atlantic, the virtual exchange program employed GIS technology and role plays to deepen students’ grasp of environmental democracy and sustainability. It highlighted the significance of real-time collaboration through environmental games and online mapping, enabling students to engage with and visualize environmental concerns. Based on analysis of this program, the book chapter underscores the effectiveness of virtual exchange programs in fostering intercultural skills, promoting sustainability awareness, facilitating collaborative learning, and cultivating future environmental leaders well-versed in environmental democracy principles.
