On 8 May 2024, RIAS PhD Candidate Debby Esmeé de Vlugt will defend her dissertation, titled “A New Feeling of Unity: Decolonial Black Power in the Dutch Atlantic (1968-1973).”
Her project explores the history of transnational Black Power activism in the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean and was supervised by Professors Damian Pargas, Giles Scott-Smith, and Peter Meel. In 2019, Debby Esmeé de Vlugt became a PhD Candidate at the RIAS as part of the “Rooseveltian Century” scholarship project. She is currently a lecturer in the History of International Relations at Utrecht University.
