On Friday 8 April 2022 the RIAS will host the Roosevelt Lecture by Sara Polak.
The lecture will be held in the auditorium (filmzaal) of the Provinciehuis in Middelburg. The lecture will be on Franklin D. Roosevelt in American memory. Dr. Polak will analyze Roosevelt’s construction as a cultural icon in American memory from two perspectives. First, she examines him as a historical leader. Second, she looks at the portayals and negotiations of the FDR icon in cultural memory from the vantage point of the early twenty-first century. She argues that he deliberately positioned himself in such a way as to allow almost any narrative to adopt him as a relevant historical example, even down to the present day.
