Oran Patrick Kennedy is the RIAS Short-Term Fellow between September and December 2024.
He received his Ph.D. in History from Leiden University in 2021. Over the past three-and-a-half years, he served as a lecturer at Leiden University and the University of Groningen respectively. His research interests include eighteenth and nineteenth-century US/North American history, African American and African Canadian history, slavery and emancipation in North America, freedom seekers and the Underground Railroad, abolitionism and anti-slavery movements, and race and citizenship, the antebellum period, and the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction.
At the RIAS, Oran will explore campaigns for Black citizenship and resistance to racial exclusion in the Midwestern United States between the early American republic and Reconstruction. He will participate in the “Contesting Black Citizenship from the American Revolution to the Present” conference at the RIAS in December 2024.
Oran is thrilled to spend the next few months working in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Middelburg.
